Boarding Chances for Children

20th October 2015

Buttle UK has facilitated and funded boarding places for vulnerable children for over 50 years. We have done this in the strong belief that a boarding school education can offer some children a transformational opportunity.

We launched a three-year research study looking at the impact boarding schools can have on improving outcomes for vulnerable children.  Our aim was to demonstrate how the use of boarding can reduce the need for further intervention from children’s services, and even keep some children out of care.

The Education Endowment Foundation comitted funding to the research.  York and Durham Universities were appointed as independent researchers.  The Department for Education fully supported the study and were comitted to contributing funding to places at state boarding schools. Other funders included participating local authorities, schools, Buttle UK, Royal National Children’s Foundation and SFIA Educational Trust.

We worked with a number of local authorities to place children at boarding school in Year 7, starting between September 2015 - 2017.

Unfortunately the Boarding Chances for Children Project we sought to run with the Education Endowment Foundation and the Department for Education came to an end in January 2017.  To read more about this, please click here
