Chances for Children teams up with Dreams Beds and The Sun for Beds for Kids
30th April 2018
Here at Buttle UK we estimate that as many as 400,000 children do not have their own bed. One third of the families we help each year need at least one bed for their children. Figures for 2016/17 published by the Department for Work and Pensions in March estimate that 4 million children are living in low-income families. These are children who do not have a suitable bed to sleep in because they are sharing with parents or siblings; they are sleeping on the floor or their beds are damaged to the point where they are simply not fit to use.
All proceeds from Beds for Kids go to Chances for Children, Buttle UK’s campaign to support children in crisis across the UK.
To enable Chances for Children to reach more kids than ever before, for every bed purchased at a Dreams store one will be donated to the charity.
To help grow awareness of the campaign, The Sun has produced an illustrated children’s storybook called ‘That’s no place to sleep’, revolving around Sleepy Simon’s quest to find a bed. The storybook will be available to buy from May 14th in over 190 Dreams Beds stores, with all proceeds going to charity.
The Sun has also created a video version of the book, narrated by famous faces, including Davina McCall, Anton du Beke, Richard Arnold, Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford. With the celebrities each reading a verse from the story, it will be free for audiences to watch online at thesun.co.uk
How you can get involved:
For every bed or mattress bought from Dreams Beds stores across the UK, one will be donated to Chances for Children. Simply take the voucher in The Sun or at thesun.co.uk into any Dreams Beds store, make a purchase, and you’ll be making a big difference to a child’s sleep.
Readers can donate directly to the charity through the Beds for Kids page at mydonate.bt.com/charities/bedsforkids
You can also buy an exclusive copy of the specially created storybook ‘That’s No Place to Sleep’, telling the story of Sleepy Simon’s quest for a bed. All proceeds go straight to the charity and you can buy a copy in all Dreams Beds stores from 14th May.
Gerri McAndrew OBE, CEO of Buttle UK: “It is shocking that so many children in twenty-first century Britain do not have the basics that we all take for granted, like a bed of their own."
“We are thrilled that The Sun and Dreams Beds have come together to help support more children who don’t have a proper bed. We hope the British public get behind the Beds for Kids campaign so that we can get more beds out to the children that really need them,” McAndrew added.
Lisa Bond, Chief Marketing Officer, Dreams: “As experts in sleep, we know just how important a good night’s rest is, especially for a child’s physical and educational development. That’s why we are proud to be working in partnership with the Sun and Buttle UK to play our part in raising awareness of this serious issue.”
Kate Bird, Chief Marketing Officer at The Sun, said: “The Sun is delighted to be backing Beds for Kids by partnering with Buttle UK and Dreams to raise awareness and funds. With the help of The Sun’s combined audience of 33 million readers and the wider public, together we can help reverse this downwards trend.”
