Buttle UK announces the appointment of new CEO

10th July 2018

Buttle UK today announces the appointment of Joseph Howes as its new CEO after Gerri McAndrew OBE, who led the organisation for 15 years, steps down in September.

Joseph joins the charity from Depaul UK, a charity which supports the homeless, vulnerable and disadvantaged, where he has been the Executive Director of Fundraising, Development and Communications since October 2013.  During this time he has overseen considerable growth.

His arrival at Buttle UK in September coincides with the Charity’s 65th anniversary, and marks a period of significant development. Last year it gave out 13,500 grants totaling almost £4.6m – the most in a single year to date – and it has also seen its major fundraising initiative, the Chances for Children Campaign, pass the £3m mark.

The Campaign is part of a strategy over the last four years built around the development of Chances for Children grants, an innovation in the way Buttle UK delivers its grant-giving. These grants, averaging £1,500 in value, are designed to meet the multiple needs of vulnerable children and young people by funding a holistic package of support.  The grants are unique in the social care sector, and independent evaluation has found that the average public expenditure expected to be saved for each grant of £1,500 is £8,000.

Joseph Howes said: “Helping children and young people facing poverty and crisis has never been more important and Buttle UK has a rich history in ensuring that they get the right support.  I am delighted to be joining Buttle UK and am looking forward to building on the incredible work that’s already been done. I’m particularly excited to work with the organisation’s amazing trustees, staff and partners to provide grants that change lives and ensure we do even more to help vulnerable children and young people reach their potential.”

Buttle UK Chair of Trustees, Professor Caroline Gipps, said: “We are excited to have Joseph join us to lead Buttle UK through the next stage of its development, building on the success of our Chances for Children grants.  Joseph’s experience in creating growth will help us to expand the vital work of the Charity and reach thousands more children and young people in crisis in the coming years.”

Joseph will be leading the organisation in further developing its Chances for Children grant giving, expanding this work through new partnerships with the private, public and voluntary sectors to reach its fundraising campaign target of £10m, while using the insights gained from its grant giving to ensure the voices and needs of its beneficiaries are heard, so that thousands more children and young people in crisis can benefit from Frank Buttle’s legacy in the years to come.
