Students & Trainees Programme
Read about: Why we help and The difference it makes

Our Student and Trainee Grants programme awards financial support to young people (aged 16-20), with severe social problems, particularly those who are estranged from their parents, to attend further education and training. By funding course costs, equipment, field trips or basic day-to-day living costs, Buttle UK relieves the financial pressures and worries that often force these vulnerable young people to abandon their studies early. In 2009-2010 Buttle UK enabled 172 young people to access courses as varied as architecture, music technology, business and tree surgery.
How to Apply
Why we help:
Most young people understand the importance of education and training in achieving their ambitions. For all young people further, higher and vocational education or training is becoming more expensive.

However, for those who are struggling with difficult issues such as family breakdown, abuse or neglect the challenges of completing their education post-16 can be daunting. For many, these concerns can get in the way of their studies and can force them to drop off their course and, sometimes, out of education entirely.
All of the students and trainees that receive our grants have experienced great difficulties in their personal lives. Frequently, they have escaped damaging home environments and have been left isolated and separated from family and friends. Some have had to leave everything and everyone behind as they fled a country torn apart by war.
Buttle UK supports each and every young person as an individual, working closely with the student and their support worker or course tutor, to ensure that we understand their exact needs. We offer support for a wide range of courses at many different types of institution - courses such as bricklaying, tree surgery, engineering and medicine. Our Student & Trainee grants help with course costs, educational requirements or simply the cost of living. Relieving financial worries can make a significant impact on the happiness, wellbeing and performance of a young student or trainee, and make the difference between them completing their course or dropping out.
The difference it makes:

In spite of difficult and often tragic personal histories, the young people we support all see education and training as the way to succeed in life. They have overcome multiple challenges and successfully secured a place on a course that they believe will help them in the future. The bespoke package of support we provide helps them maintain their studies - in 2009/10 78% of those young people we supported completed the academic year. Of those that finished their study, several achieved distinctions and one received a first class degree.
