National Care Leavers' Week 2012: 24th October - 30th October

22 October 2012

Wednesday 24th October marks the start of National Care Leavers’ Week, coordinated by the Care Leavers’ Foundation.

The theme of this year’s National Care Leavers’ Week is ‘Opening Doors’ and the week hopes to question and raise awareness about what more can be done to open up opportunities for young people leaving care.

Our By Degrees research into the experience of Care Leavers in higher education highlighted the many barriers that this cohort faces in applying to and succeeding in higher education. The participants in our study displayed amazing resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles to succeed at university and it showed the potential for many more to do so if there were fewer barriers to overcome. The Buttle UK Quality Mark came out of the recommendations of the study as a mark of excellence to recognize the work that institutions in further and higher education do to raise aspirations and support young people in and leaving care.

88 universities and 38 colleges across the UK have the award and we want to use this week to both celebrate the work that these institutions are doing and to encourage those without the award to understand more about the work they could be doing to support and open doors for young people in and leaving care.
